Joined-Up Geography: Unpacking the World Together

I created Holistic Humanities to offer young people a space where learning feels connected, curiosity is welcomed, and education remains grounded in community.

When the COVID-19 lockdowns hit, I moved our sessions online to keep our young people connected and engaged. What started as an immediate response to that lockdown season turned out to be something truly special, and our online groups have been running continuously ever since.

What is “Joined-Up Geography”?
Geography isn’t about memorising capitals, tracing rivers, or colouring in boundaries. At its heart, geography is the lens through which we make sense of our world today.
That’s why our Joined-Up Geography sessions take a ‘join-the-dots’ approach—tying together physical geography, human systems, current events, and deep historical context to help us understand how the world around us actually works. To truly make sense of the present, we have to look at how we got here.

Gold, Power, and the Past

Take our upcoming session as an example. We are exploring the topic of gold, with a particular focus on Africa. On the surface, it’s a study in physical and economic geography. But you cannot unpack the significance of gold today without looking at the historical forces that shaped its extraction, trade, and geopolitics.

We will be looking closely at real-world developments in Burkina Faso, where nationalisation, domestic refining, and the cutting back of long-standing French economic influence are redefining resource control in the region. By connecting natural resources to historical realities and current headlines, we help young learners see the bigger picture.

A Springboard for Learning

Our online groups are designed to be flexible and adaptable to how your family learns.

They can serve as a standalone deep dive for young people who love a lively, focused exploration into a specific topic each week.

Alternatively, they work brilliantly as a springboard for project-based learning, giving home-educated young people a solid starting point to research, write, or create projects in their own time.

Upcoming Groups

On Mondays, we run two online sessions.

Our Early Bird Holistic History group meets at 8:50 AM. This week, we will be exploring historical turning points, starting with Hannibal, his elephants, and his crossing of the Alps.

At 11:00 AM, our Joined-Up Geography group meets to unpack the physical and human world, starting with our focus on gold and African colonisation.

Our Friday afternoon face-to-face sessions are also restarting this week. If you would like the location and timing details for the in-person group, please drop me a line.

Pay What You Can

Having home-educated my own children, I know how carefully families have to balance educational costs. I want these sessions to be genuinely accessible to everyone in our community, and I would much rather a young person join us and pay what works for your family than be turned away by cost.

All sessions operate on a flexible pay-what-you-can basis. If you need to pay less, you are completely welcome to adjust your contribution to whatever is manageable. All I ask, entirely without judgment, is that you drop me a quick note beforehand so I know what to expect.

Equally, for families who are comfortably off and value what I deliver, meeting the recommended rate—or contributing a bit extra—directly sustains these groups and helps keep them open to everyone.
As a guide, the recommended contribution is £8 for a single online session.

If two siblings attend, or if a student joins both Monday online sessions, the recommended rate is £12 per slot (£24 total for both).

If you’d like your young person to join us this week or if you have any questions at all, please drop me a message. I’d love to welcome you to the group!
